How Infrared Sauna Works

Unlike conventional saunas that heat the surrounding air, infrared saunas emit light waves in the infrared spectrum that are absorbed directly by body tissue. The result is a deep, cellular-level warmth that raises your core temperature, causes you to sweat, and produces physiological effects that surface-level heat cannot replicate.

The increased core temperature dilates blood vessels, improving circulation and oxygen delivery to muscles and joints. This is particularly beneficial for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, stiff joints, or tight muscles that don't fully respond to chiropractic alone.

Many patients schedule infrared sauna immediately before or after their adjustment. The muscle relaxation from the heat makes the adjustment more comfortable and often more effective.

Questions About the Sauna

How is infrared different from a traditional sauna?

A traditional sauna heats the air around you to 180–220°F. Infrared saunas use light waves to heat your body directly at much lower air temperatures (120–150°F). The infrared energy penetrates tissue up to 1.5 inches deep, producing a more intense therapeutic sweat at a temperature most people find more comfortable.

How long is a session?

Sessions run 30–45 minutes. First-timers typically start with a shorter session to assess tolerance. Bring water and wear comfortable, light clothing or a towel.

Is it safe if I have a heart condition?

Infrared sauna is contraindicated for some cardiovascular conditions. Discuss your full medical history with Dr. Nance before your first session. We will not put you in the sauna if there is any concern about your safety.
